Mail Rail – London’s Hidden Underground Railway

Heavy traffic has always been a problem in London and at the start of the 20th century the postal service needed a way of being able to deliver important mail around the capital quickly and efficiently. Now to avoid the traffic and get around London we (as humans) use the Tube - back in 1927, the postal service opened the MAIL TRAIN - the tube service for post!

It stretches out over six and a half miles and back in its day it was estimated it carried 25,000 bags of mail around the city. It closed in 2003 as it was deemed to expensive to run as it was cheaper to move mail about above land instead.

Today we visit the Postal Museum in London and experience the Mail Rail. The postal service was one of the first social networks as it allowed people to communicate with each other and Mail Rail speeded up the delivery process considerably.
