Strange Places at Sea – Maunsell Sea Forts

The Maunsell sea forts were built in the 1940’s by Guy Maunsell. They were situated in the Thames estuary and the Mersey. The forts were built to protect the mainland UK from the Germans during the second world war. The forts were decommissioned after the second world war in the 1950’s. The forts were used by various pirate radio stations after the war.

The eerie structures on the Thames estuary are situated about 11 miles out to sea can be reached by boat. We took the Greta barge from Whitstable to the sea forts. In this video, you will see the sea forts and witness the haunting bell tolling in the background from a buoy located next to the forts. You will also experience the trip on the barge (one of the oldest barges left in the UK).
